Global warming is heating up the Arctic the fastest out of anywhere else even in the harsh tundra it has shrank around 14% in the last decade. From satellite view there is about 770,000 square miles less of ice than there was back in the 1980s. That amount of melted ice is bigger than the state of Alaska and California combined. Now since the ice is melting in the spring faster forming in the fall earlier polar bears have to travel farther to find sea ice to hunt on. The farther a polar bear has to travel to get food the more weight they lose and it seems that most of the hunts are not returning the number of calories the polar bears need in their bodies. Polar bears are just not made for long distances so this new environmental change that has arrived is putting their survival at risk. As of right now there is around 20,000-30,000 polar bears in the wildlife but for the United States polar bears have been deemed vulnerable and may quickly move to endangered.
